ProtonDB — Linux Game Compatibility
Check if your Steam games work on Linux & Steam Deck
📚 What is ProtonDB?
ProtonDB is a community-driven database that tracks the compatibility of Windows games running on Linux through Valve's Proton compatibility layer. Proton is built into Steam and allows Windows games to run on Linux and Steam Deck without requiring developers to create native Linux ports. The ProtonDB community tests thousands of games and reports their findings, including performance notes, required tweaks, and overall compatibility ratings.
Each game receives a community-verified rating based on how well it runs under Proton. These ratings help Linux users make informed purchasing decisions and find the right Proton version or settings for optimal gameplay. The database is continuously updated as new Proton versions are released and games receive patches.
🏆 Rating Tiers Explained
Runs perfectly out of the box — no tweaks, no issues, indistinguishable from native. The ideal Linux gaming experience.
Runs with minor tweaks or occasional issues — fully playable from start to finish with small workarounds. Most games land here.
Runs with notable issues — playable but may require significant tweaks, experience performance drops, or have minor visual glitches.
Runs but with major issues — may crash, have significant performance problems, or missing features. Requires advanced tinkering.
Broken — either won't launch, crashes immediately, or is completely unplayable. Anti-cheat issues are a common cause. Avoid on Linux.
🛠 Proton Versions
Different Proton versions can dramatically affect game compatibility. Steam includes official Proton versions (Proton Experimental, Proton 9.x, 8.x), while the community maintains GE-Proton (GloriousEggroll's custom build) with additional patches and fixes for specific games.
Bleeding-edge — latest fixes, may be less stable. Auto-updated by Steam.
Stable releases — well-tested, reliable. Recommended for most games.
Community build with extra patches. Often fixes games that official Proton can't run. Install via ProtonUp-Qt.
